I just spent $135 on a battery for a ford explorer. That’s a tad bit more than $ 3.45.

I lov e stuff like this.

I guess it’s the way of New York in that a lot of really large places go from their peak in the old days to run down dilapidated bui ldings in the modern age while dilapidated buildings of old in new York are now demanding a premium to own a small piece of it.

Adjusted for inflation, that’s a $7 spark plug and a $62.14 battery.

Seems spendy for plugs, especially when they needed to be changed so frequently.

The spark plug price includes labor though. Nice price.

You’re about 45 years too late. Apartment towers now there IIRC.

That’s $0.39 installed . Spark plugs can be pretty easy, but I don’t think your are going to find a shop that will do them for $7 a piece.

But is it even ‘gentrification’? New York has always been a place for people to flock to and New York isn’t getting any bigger and so places demand a premium. People always want to get the best price for what they are selling.

Nobody puts their car up for auction and then stops it midway and says, ‘yeah, that’ll do, we’ll stop it there!’. Businesses don’t just sell things for 30% what they want for it, they start selling it for 30% off be cause it wasn’t selling well at full price and they either want to draw people in or get shot of the items so they can get stuff in to sell at full price that people will buy because they want to make money .

Haha especially make it something difficult to reach like a Subaru! I didn't find it that challenging on my STi but compared to my Miata, it was about 1000x harder.

This was the era when pretty much everything was a flathead - usually either a straight six or a straight eight, sometimes a V8. Every corner garage could do every mechanical repair on every car.

Cars back then went maybe 50,000 miles if they were well taken car of. Full tune ups every 5,000 - 10,000 miles. Oil change 1500 miles etc...
